Canadian Club, Al Capone and Hiram Walker

A grand morning of sitting in a WiFi hotspot, watching Windsor business men and women go about their day. I have decided to use a few websites/apps to attempt to find some homestay or earn-your-keep type deal in the Canadian rockies. So far I have found numerous places to apply for, I just hope my application is seen and accepted…there is no rush but it would be amazing to have a few months locked in to do some work and hiking. That was my morning…

I peeled myself from my chair around 2pm and walked on down to the Canadian Club Mansion and distillery and booked myself into the 3pm tour. I wasn’t to familiar with the history behind the whisky and was amazed to learn more than I expected to for such a location. I was whisked back (almost pun intended) 130years to when Hiram Walker & Sons started up his empire on the banks of Windsor, how the spirit was bootlegged into Detroit, most profitably by Al Capone. I scanned a speak-easy for the bullet hole in the brick wall caused after Al Capone executed some poor sod in a dodgy dealing. And finally got to taste some new CC that should hit Aussie shelves in the near future. Cc Maple being one that will take off I imagine… 35% maple syrup flavored whisky…I would serve it with ice cream.

After the tour I strolled around Walkerville (more history, wiki it if you like) and back to meet Maria’s mother, who coincidentally lives next door.

Tonight I was invited to go along to a Toastmasters competition by Maria, having heard about the organisation before I was curious enough to go along. We sat and listened to numerous speakers deliver their stories as professionally as possible for the opportunity to progress in the competition. It was a fun and inspiring night, I met some very cool people. Possibly will check them out when I return home to Australia.

Then I busted a Ukulele string….guess what I am going shopping for tomorrow?
